Want to learn modes? It’s not hard. Get out your keyboard, guitar or other instrument and have the chart above in front of you.
Here’s what you do:
1. Learn the Ionian mode (major scale) for each note: C,Db,D,Eb,E, etc…
2. Spend some time digesting the chart above using your instrument. What it boils down to though is the area boxed in red. Once you know the Ionian mode, then you can just apply the necessary sharps and flats for each mode. When you study this, you’ll see it’s really only a handful of variations.
3. Practice each mode in the key of C per the chart above. Once you get used to the variations in each mode (i.e., b3, b7 for the Dorian mode), then start practicing those variations in each key.
